NATO foreign ministers to meet in Turkey on Wednesday

NATO foreign ministers will gather in Antalya, Turkey, on May 14–15 for an informal meeting hosted by Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, Anadolu agency reported on Saturday, citing diplomatic sources.

Representatives from all 32 NATO member states, along with Secretary-General Mark Rutte, are expected to attend the meeting, which will provide a platform for additional consultations ahead of the NATO leaders’ summit set to be held in The Hague on June 24-25.

Separately, the Turkish foreign minister expressed his country’s readiness to undertake the duty to observe a possible ceasefire in Ukraine during a “coalition of the willing” call with Kyiv’s partners on Saturday, according to Reuters.

This comes as major European powers threw their weight behind an unconditional 30-day Ukraine ceasefire, with the backing of U.S. President Donald Trump, while threatening President Vladimir Putin with “massive” new sanctions if he did not accept within days.

NATO member Turkey has maintained cordial ties with both Kyiv and Moscow since the war erupted in 2022. It has voiced support for Ukraine’s territorial integrity and provided it with military help, while opposing sanctions on Russia.

In March, Turkey’s defence ministry said that it could contribute to a potential peacekeeping mission in Ukraine if a ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia is declared. Last month, Ukrainian, British, French and Turkish military representatives met in Turkey to discuss Black Sea security after a possible ceasefire is agreed between Ukraine and Russia.
