NATO is set to deploy approximately 10 ships to the Baltic Sea to safeguard critical underwater infrastructure, according to reports from Finnish broadcasters citing insider sources.
The naval fleet is expected to begin arriving at the end of this week and will remain stationed in the region until April. The ships will be strategically positioned near energy and telecommunications cables, serving as a deterrent to potential threats, the report added.
This move follows recent damage to four underwater telecommunications cables between December 25 and 26. Three of the affected cables connect Finland and Estonia, while one links Finland with Germany. The incident has heightened concerns about the security of underwater infrastructure in the region.
