NATO Chief : Ukraine Must Be Central in Any Talks on Its Future

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte emphasized on Thursday that Ukraine must be directly involved in any discussions concerning its future. Speaking ahead of a defense ministers meeting in Brussels, Rutte stated that ensuring Ukraine’s participation is crucial for securing a lasting resolution and preventing further aggression.

He also highlighted concerns about military expenditure, acknowledging that NATO countries are not producing enough weaponry and must increase spending to counter growing threats from Russia and other adversaries.

The ongoing diplomatic discussions have gained momentum following Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s recent conversation with US President Donald Trump. Zelenskyy described the exchange as “meaningful” and centered on potential pathways to peace. Trump also spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin, with both leaders expressing a willingness to collaborate on ending the conflict.

UK Defense Secretary John Healey echoed NATO’s position, affirming that any negotiations must prioritize Ukraine’s voice. He reiterated that Russia remains a long-term threat beyond Ukraine and emphasized that no agreements should be reached without Kyiv’s direct involvement. NATO leaders continue to stress the importance of maintaining military support for Ukraine while seeking diplomatic solutions to the crisis.
