NAPEC 2024: Green Hydrogen Production, Its Challenges in Algeria

The production of green hydrogen and its associated challenges in Algeria was the focal point of a conference held on Wednesday in Oran, marking the conclusion of the 12th edition of the international professional exhibition, “Africa & Mediterranean Energy & Hydrogen Exhibition and Conference” (NAPEC 2024).

Several speakers underscored Algeria’s commitment to green hydrogen production, highlighting the country’s vast potential—especially its abundant solar resources—while also addressing significant challenges, such as the regulatory framework and high production costs.

Badreddine Boutaghriout, project manager at the Central Research and Development Department of Sonatrach Group, emphasized the necessity of a solid regulatory and normative framework for hydrogen production. He stated, “Without it, crucial links in the value chain of this industry cannot exist.” He stressed that establishing a robust regulatory framework is essential for managing this sensitive and vital aspect of economic development.

Once a regulatory framework is in place, he noted the need to train human capital by nurturing talent and skills within research centers and conducting adequate research to develop expertise and state-of-the-art technological tools dedicated to this sector.

Meanwhile, Lounis Lamia, head of the Economic Studies and Associated Activities Department at Sonatrach’s Strategy, Planning, and Economy Directorate, pointed out that the high production costs of hydrogen exceed $6 per kilogram—more than six times the cost of natural gas. She emphasized the importance of achieving genuine technological advancements in this field, adopting cutting-edge technologies, and creating an industrial network of supporting companies around Sonatrach in this industry.

Additionally, Salim Gherbi, head of the renewable energy projects development department, highlighted the significance of adapting industrial facilities for hydrogen production. He reminded attendees of the recent agreements signed between Algeria and its partners aimed at hydrogen production, which could play a crucial role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and fostering national economic development.

It is noteworthy that the 12th edition of the “Africa & Mediterranean Energy & Hydrogen Exhibition and Conference” (NAPEC 2024) took place over three days in Oran, under the theme: “Balancing Hydrocarbons and Clean Energies: Towards an Efficient Energy Mix.”
