NAM Reaffirms Support for Sahrawi Right to Self-Determination

The Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) reaffirmed its traditional and consistent support for the right of the people of Western Sahara to self-determination during its 19th ministerial meeting held on October 15–16 in Kampala.

In the final document concluding the meeting, NAM reiterated its continued backing of the efforts of the United Nations Secretary-General and his personal envoy for Western Sahara to achieve a political solution ensuring the Sahrawi people’s exercise of their right to self-determination, in accordance with the UN Charter and General Assembly resolution 1514 on the “Declaration on the Granting of Independence to Colonial Countries and Peoples.”

The movement stressed that all options allowing the Sahrawi people to exercise their right to self-determination remain valid, provided they reflect the freely expressed will of the people and respect the principles outlined in General Assembly resolutions.

The meeting also highlighted the UN’s legal responsibility regarding the decolonization of Western Sahara, including its role in supervising the negotiation process between the parties to the conflict to enable the Sahrawi people to exercise their right to self-determination.
