MSF: Airstrike Hits Organization’s Hospital in South Sudan

Doctors Without Borders (MSF) said that one of its hospitals in Jonglei state in South Sudan, serving over 200,000 people, was hit by an airstrike, resulting in the destruction of the hospital’s main warehouse and most of the critical medical supplies.

The organization emphasized in a statement that South Sudanese government forces are the only armed party in the country capable of performing aerial strikes.

For months, South Sudan has been witnessing clashes, which, according to the United Nations, are occurring at a scale unseen in the country since 2017, raising fears of a renewed civil war in the country.

Some of the fiercest clashes have taken place in Jonglei, in the east of the country, near the Ethiopian border, where government forces are seeking to halt an attack carried out by fighters loyal to the Sudan People’s Liberation Army.

The NGO said that one MSF staff member suffered minor injuries during the airstrike, adding that the hospital was evacuated and patients were discharged after receiving information about a possible strike.
