Mouloudji Showcases Algeria’s Women’s Empowerment Experience in New York

ALGIERS, March 12, 2025 – Algerian Minister of National Solidarity, Family, and Women’s Affairs, Soraya Mouloudji, showcased Algeria’s commitment to women’s empowerment on Wednesday during her participation in the plenary session of the 69th Commission on the Status of Women in New York. She emphasized that the progress achieved reflects the political will of the nation’s leadership to empower women, as noted in a ministry press release.

Representing Algeria at the plenary session, which runs from March 9 to 15, the minister detailed “Algeria’s experience in promoting women’s rights and their economic and social empowerment.” She highlighted that Algeria has made “significant strides in implementing the twelve areas outlined in the Beijing Declaration, guided by the enlightened leadership of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, through programs aimed at enhancing women’s roles across various sectors.”

During her address, the minister pointed out that “the constitutional amendment of 2020 enshrined the principle of gender equality in both rights and responsibilities, while also promoting women’s political participation and access to leadership positions.” She underscored the importance of “parity in the labor market and the constitutional protection of women against violence.”

Mouloudji further noted that Algerian women occupy significant roles in leadership and political parties, highlighting their presence in high-ranking positions within various security and military institutions.

She also asserted that Algeria places “special emphasis on women as agents of peace” through the implementation of the “Women, Security, and Peace” agenda, the African Union’s Agenda 2063 for development, and the adoption of a national plan to enact UN Resolution 1325.

On the economic front, she stated that “Algeria has adopted an employment policy rooted in equal opportunities for job access and equal pay,” adding that the government “is committed to supporting women in entrepreneurship and has initiated several programs aimed at the economic integration of women, including housewives and rural women.”

Additionally, Algeria has prioritized the health of working women by extending maternity leave from three to five months, along with other social benefits and allowances. The minister affirmed that “the accomplishments achieved reflect the political will of the country’s leadership to ensure women’s empowerment and support them at all levels.”

On this occasion, the minister expressed concern for Palestinian women, highlighting the suffering and violations they endure and calling for “renewed efforts to protect them and mitigate all forms of aggression and deprivation they face.”

Mouloudji reaffirmed that Algeria has consistently advocated for women’s right to live in peace and security worldwide, upholding its commitments to shared values and promoting the humanism that unites us in harmony and peace.

On the sidelines of this session, the minister engaged in numerous discussions that enabled her to further “highlight Algeria’s efforts in supporting and promoting women.”
