Morocco Weaponizes Media Against Algeria, Mauritanian Journalist Reveals

Prominent Mauritanian journalist Biba Ould Amhadi has accused Moroccan media of operating under strict political directives designed to systematically tarnish Algeria’s image at the regional and international levels. He alleged that the editorial lines of several outlets, particularly those with international reach, serve the specific agendas of the Makhzen regime against Algeria.

In press statements, Ould Amhadi noted that as early as the 1990s, Moroccan media actively worked to impose a misleading narrative portraying Algeria as an “isolated and marginalized” state, despite diplomatic and political realities that painted a very different picture on the world stage.

He further disclosed that any attempt to cover official events or visits highlighting Algeria’s foreign policy activity was treated as a direct violation of the official narrative, routinely exposing journalists to severe pressure and reprimands from administration.

Ould Amhadi pointed out that these practices reflect the deeply entangled relationship between media and power in Morocco, where press platforms are exploited as tools to settle regional political scores. This propaganda discourse, he added, bypasses journalistic professionalism to deliberately target Algeria’s regional role and convince domestic and international public opinion that the country is a besieged and marginalized state.

He stressed that such practices lay bare the full extent of political interference in Moroccan media, underscoring the immense pressure faced by independent journalists who attempt to report facts objectively, free from official directives and state-steered editorial policies.

Concluding his remarks, Ould Amhadi explained that these circumstances ultimately drove him to resign from Morocco’s Medi 1 Radio a move he described as a principled and symbolic stand reflecting his categorical refusal to participate in misleading media campaigns targeting Algeria.
