Morocco Implicated in New Espionage Scandal in Spain

Morocco is at the center of a new espionage scandal in Spain, involving the theft of sensitive military information from the Canary Islands and Melilla, with alleged support from France, according to the Spanish newspaper El Periódico.

The scandal involves a network of four Moroccan agents, led by Yassine Mansouri, who previously featured in a European Parliament corruption case. The agents are accused of stealing classified military data, which included information from at least two Spanish soldiers, causing a stir within Spain’s intelligence services.

Adding to the gravity of the situation, French intelligence is reportedly accused of providing logistical and informational support to Morocco, fueling concerns about France’s growing ties with Morocco. The involvement of France could be seen as an attempt to undermine Spain, especially concerning NATO military bases in Ceuta and Melilla.

This new scandal echoes previous concerns, including a 2022 report about potential leaks of sensitive Spanish defense information to Moroccan intelligence, raising questions about the security of European and NATO defenses.
