Morocco Faces Repeated Setbacks Within the African Union

Kigali – Morocco has endured yet another diplomatic setback as its candidate for the position of Director-General of the African Medicines Agency (AMA) was disqualified in elections held Wednesday in Kigali, Rwanda. Ghana’s Delese Mimi Darko won the vote, defeating Morocco’s nominee, Bouchra Meddah.

This marks the fifth diplomatic failure for Rabat in 2025. The series began with Morocco’s double defeat in two rounds of elections for a Northern Africa seat on the Peace and Security Council. It continued with a third failure in February when Latifa Akharbach lost her bid for Vice-President of the African Commission during the African Union Summit.

A fourth defeat came last week when Morocco’s campaign for the prestigious Nelson Mandela Prize ended in disappointment. Despite significant diplomatic and intelligence efforts, the prize was awarded to Amina Bouayach, head of Morocco’s National Human Rights Council, in a global UN-organized competition.

With the AMA defeat, Morocco’s string of failures underscores the growing isolation of the Makhzen regime due to its continued occupation of Western Sahara. These repeated losses reveal the limitations of its diplomatic strategies and highlight the ineffectiveness of its attempts to gain influence through financial and political pressure.
