Moroccan Rights Groups Condemn Massive Crackdown on Protesters

Moroccan human rights organizations have condemned the large-scale wave of arrests targeting young protesters demanding their legitimate rights, highlighting a clear setback in the observance of human rights. The Moroccan Body for the Support of Political Prisoners (Himam) reported that the wave of arrests launched by the Moroccan authorities did not spare minors, emphasizing that this campaign reflects a broader context marked by the prioritization of security measures over the rule of law.
Himam further expressed concern over “the alarming shrinking of spaces for free expression” in Morocco. In a press release, the organization reported that over 600 people have been arrested in recent days, including around 100 children and minors. These figures do not include individuals who were briefly detained by police and later released. Himam regards these figures as “appalling,” considering they “reflect the severity of breaches against the rights, freedom, as well as physical and moral integrity” of individuals. Furthermore, it deems the situation particularly perilous, given the arrests involving children and minors, arguing that it is a “clear breach of criminal procedures.”
