Microsoft Expands AI Investments in South Africa with $298 Million Commitment

Microsoft has announced a $298 million investment to expand its artificial intelligence (AI) and data center infrastructure in South Africa, according to company Vice Chair Brad Smith during a conference in Johannesburg.
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa welcomed the announcement, calling it “an exceptional opportunity” for the country to attract major investments, particularly amid recent tensions with the new U.S. administration.
Smith further stated that Microsoft’s total investment in South African data centers would reach $1 billion, incorporating previously announced allocations.
In addition to infrastructure expansion, Microsoft will launch a training program for 50,000 individuals, offering certifications in cloud engineering, AI, and cybersecurity to enhance the country’s digital workforce.
