Michigan’s Arab-American Voters : The Decisive Force That Could Swing the U.S. Election

As the 2024 U.S. presidential election approaches, all eyes are on Michigan, where a key issue could significantly sway the outcome. With just over a day until voting begins, Vice President Kamala Harris faces substantial challenges that could cost her this pivotal state.

In an open letter, filmmaker and political commentator Michael Moore warned Harris that her chances in Michigan could be lost if she doesn’t clearly address “Israel”‘s actions in Gaza. Moore, well-acquainted with Michigan, emphasized the deep impact this has on the state’s Arab and Muslim communities, where many feel both frustrated and fearful about U.S. policies. Recent polls show a sharp decline in support for the Biden-Harris ticket among these groups—from 70% in 2020 to just 12% today.

The Influence of the Arab and Muslim Communities
Michigan is home to one of the largest Arab and Muslim communities in the U.S., with a population of 200,000 to 300,000. Many of these individuals are deeply concerned about loved ones in Gaza, and this concern is shaping their political views. Their diminishing support for Harris, largely due to her stance on U.S. aid to “Israel”, is echoed by a new movement in Michigan rejecting her campaign.

Many Arab-American voters in Michigan are now considering whether to skip the presidential vote entirely or leave the “president” field blank on their ballots. This hesitation could drastically affect Harris’s chances in the state.

Michigan’s Importance in the Election
Michigan is a critical swing state that could decide the outcome of the election. As columnist Michelle Goldberg cautioned, “If we lose Michigan, we lose the White House.”

With the election countdown ticking away, the political influence of Michigan’s Arab and Muslim communities cannot be overlooked. Their voice could prove decisive in shaping not just state results, but potentially the entire 2024 presidential election.
