Merz : EU Must Become a European Defense Union Amid Global Security Threats

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz called on Monday for the European Union to transform into a European defense union in response to growing international security challenges. Speaking at the Suddeutsche Zeitung Business Summit, Merz emphasized that Europeans must act collectively amid the war in Ukraine, shifts in Euro-Atlantic relations, and China’s increasingly assertive behavior.

“It’s a necessity to transform this European Union into a European defense union. We face international challenges that we as Europeans must address together – with the ability to defend ourselves,” Merz said, adding that Germany, as the EU’s strongest economy and most populous country, must assume greater responsibility and leadership within the bloc. He described Russia as the greatest threat to Europe, citing Moscow’s hybrid attacks on European democracies, drone incursions, and cyberattacks on businesses.

Merz also criticized the deterioration of transatlantic ties under US President Donald Trump, highlighting unilateral foreign policy moves and trade tariffs that have strained relations. He warned that China’s growing repression and aggressive foreign policy further complicate Europe’s global position, urging EU nations to respond decisively to these mounting challenges.
