Mass Prison Break in Mozambique Amid Post-Election Unrest

More than 1,500 inmates escaped from a maximum-security prison in Mozambique’s capital, Maputo, amid ongoing political turmoil following contested presidential election results.

In the chaotic breakout, clashes between prisoners and guards resulted in 33 deaths and 15 injuries. Authorities have recaptured approximately 150 of the escapees, police reported.

The unrest began earlier this week after Mozambique’s top court upheld the ruling Frelimo party’s victory in the October presidential election. The opposition claims the elections were rigged, fueling protests and intensifying tensions across the nation.
