Mansouri: Military Solution Alone Insufficient to Resolve Crises in the Sahel Region

ALGIERS – Algeria’s Secretary of State to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, in charge of African Affairs, Selma Bakhta Mansouri, stressed on Tuesday that the military solution alone has not been and will not be sufficient to address the crises in the Sahel region.

During her participation in the ministerial meeting of the African Union Peace and Security Council, held via videoconference to discuss the situation in the Sahel region, Mansouri underscored the importance of adopting a comprehensive and integrated approach that establishes a strong linkage between peace, security, and development — one that prioritizes the protection of civilians, ensures smooth and safe access to humanitarian aid, and promotes educational, social, and economic development opportunities for the benefit of the people.

According to a statement from the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mansouri highlighted Algeria’s leading role in combating terrorism and violent extremism—a role entrusted to the President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, by the African Union. She pointed out that the Algerian model, based on constructive political dialogue, national reconciliation, and social and economic reintegration, has received broad recognition. She also affirmed Algeria’s readiness to share its experience with other African countries to promote regional stability.

Additionally, Mansouri affirmed that the current challenges facing the Sahel region represent a test of Africa’s ability to embody the principle of African solutions to African problems. She called for concerted efforts to transform these challenges into opportunities that directly benefit African peoples and reinforce the values of legitimacy, dignity, and shared prosperity.
