Majority of French Want Government to Fall Over Controversial Budget Proposal

A recent Ifop-Fiducial poll revealed that 53% of French citizens favor the collapse of Prime Minister Michel Barnier’s government, citing discontent with his budget plan. The proposal, which includes €60 billion in tax increases and spending cuts, has faced widespread opposition, with 67% of respondents rejecting it.
Political insiders suggest Barnier’s government could face a no-confidence vote as early as next week, with potential ramifications for President Emmanuel Macron. An Elabe poll indicated that 63% of respondents believe Macron should step down if Barnier’s administration falls.
The budget aims to address France’s escalating public deficit, but the backlash highlights the growing frustration over economic policies perceived as burdensome for citizens. The political crisis could intensify as opposition from both far-right and leftist factions builds.
