Lithuania: LSDP takes lead in second round of legislative elections

VILNIUS – The Social Democratic Party, an opposition party in Lithuania, won the second round of the legislative elections on Sunday, according to preliminary results published by the Central Electoral Commission.

In the first round, the LSDP secured 20 seats in the Seimas (Lithuanian Parliament) and gained 32 single-member constituencies in the second round held on Sunday.

The ruling party, the Homeland Union-Lithuanian Christian Democrats, came in second and will temporarily have a faction of 28 members in the Seimas.

According to data from the Central Electoral Commission published Sunday evening after the polling stations closed, 41.31% of voters participated in the second round.

The turnout was higher than in the second round of the 2020 legislative elections but lower than in the first round of this year.

In 2020, 39.24% of voters participated in the second round, while 52.18% voted in the first round held fifteen days ago.
