Libya: Government Regains Control After Deadly Clashes in Tripoli

The Libyan National Unity Government announced on Tuesday that it has taken back control of the situation in the Abu Salim area, located south of the capital, Tripoli, where clashes between armed groups led to six fatalities on Monday night.

The Ministry of Defense for the National Unity Government stated, as reported by the Libyan news agency (LANA), that the military operation wrapped up “successfully.” They also indicated that directives have been rolled out to finalize plans for the region to ensure “lasting security and stability.”

Abdelhamid Debeibah, head of the National Unity Government, emphasized in a social media message shared by LANA that “what has been achieved in Tripoli confirms that legitimate institutions are capable of defending the homeland and safeguarding the dignity of citizens.” He added that this reinforces the principle that there is no place in Libya outside state institutions and no authority beyond the law.

On Tuesday, the Emergency Medical and Support Center reported that six bodies had been recovered from the sites of the clashes in the Abu Salim area following the stabilization of the situation.

Additionally, the National Electricity Company announced on Tuesday that electricity had been brought back to all areas supplied by the Bab Al-Azizia station due to improvements in the surrounding security situation.

In a statement, the company explained that its technical teams “were able to fully restore electricity supply to all areas connected to the Bab Al-Azizia station after stabilizing conditions that had previously hindered maintenance and operational work.”

In a statement released late Monday, the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), which had earlier called for “de-escalation,” expressed alarm regarding the evolving situation marked by intense fighting in densely populated civilian areas.

“The Mission urges all parties to immediately stop hostilities and restore calm, reminding them of their obligation to protect civilians at all times,” it stated in a social media post. The Mission highlighted that attacks against civilians could “constitute war crimes” and expressed full support for the efforts of local leaders and community figures to de-escalate the situation.
