The Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC), Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, welcomed on Wednesday the signing of the Charter for Peace and National Reconciliation in Libya by the President of the Presidential Council, Mohamed Younis El-Menfi, said the Commission in a communiqué released on Thursday.

“Chairperson of the African Union Commission welcomes the significant step taken by Mohamed Younis al-Menfi, President of the Presidential Council of the State of Libya, regarding the signing of the Charter for Peace and National Reconciliation in Tripoli…,” said the source.

Furthermore, he expressed “his profound appreciation for this commitment, which serves the interests of peace and the national reconciliation process in Libya.” The AUC Chairperson views this act as “a decisive step toward achieving lasting peace in Libya,” calling all Libyan parties to “demonstrate full commitment and to engage constructively and in good faith, in a spirit of responsibility, dialogue, and tolerance, to ensure that the national interest prevails over all other considerations.” The same official also reiterated his “full solidarity with and strong support for Libya and its people,” reaffirming “the African Union’s determination to continue its tireless efforts toward achieving lasting peace in the country.” Mahmoud Ali Youssouf reaffirmed “the supreme priority and steadfast commitment of the African Union to the implementation of the Charter for Peace and National Reconciliation, signed in Addis Ababa in February 2025 under its auspices,” while renewing “the AU’s full support for the new UN roadmap in Libya,” concluded the same source.

The President of Libya’s Presidential Council, Mohamed al-Menfi, had signed the National Charter for National Reconciliation on 7 January 2026 in Tripoli, in the presence of members of the High Council for Peace and National Reconciliation and representatives of diplomatic missions accredited to Libya.

Quoted by Libyan media, Al-Menfi had stated, on this occasion, that the charter “represents the culmination of sincere national efforts and a collective will, rooted in the belief that Libya can only achieve stability and progress through reconciliation, dialogue, and tolerance, prioritizing the nation’s interests above all else.” He had explained that “the signing of this charter is not the conclusion of the journey, but the beginning of a new phase. It requires us all to continue working with diligence and responsibility to implement the charter, translating its principles into a practical reality that citizens can feel in their daily lives.”
