Lavrov : U.S. Aims to Rekindle Cold War with Russia by Reinvigorating NATO

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov accused the United States of seeking to bring NATO back to the political forefront by escalating tensions with Russia.

Speaking at the plenary session of the OSCE foreign ministers’ meeting on Thursday, Lavrov criticized the U.S. and its allies for abandoning arms control agreements that were established in the 1980s. According to Lavrov, this move is not about security, but rather to fulfill a broader political agenda.

“The question is why?  The answer is obvious to us,” Lavrov said. “The desire is to revive NATO and reestablish its political relevance. After the failure in Afghanistan, a new unifying enemy was needed.” He further explained that this push to reawaken Cold War-era dynamics is a dangerous move, especially with the increased risks of tensions escalating into a direct military conflict.

Lavrov’s remarks highlight the growing rift between Russia and Western powers, particularly over NATO’s expansion and its involvement in global security issues. The Russian minister warned that the current trajectory could lead to a more volatile and unpredictable international environment, with greater risks of military confrontation.
