Lavrov, Rubio Reaffirm Commitment to Peaceful Conflict Resolution in Kuala Lumpur Talks

KUALA LUMPUR – Russia and the United States reaffirmed their shared commitment to peaceful conflict resolution on Thursday, as Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov met with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on the sidelines of the 58th ASEAN foreign ministers’ meeting in Malaysia’s capital.
According to a statement from the Russian Foreign Ministry, the meeting built on recent discussions between Presidents Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump, with both sides engaging in what was described as a “thorough comparison” of bilateral relations and pressing global issues.
The talks reportedly included a “substantive and frank exchange of views” on the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, developments involving Iran and Syria, and other major international challenges.
Lavrov and Rubio confirmed their countries’ mutual interest in “peaceful solutions to conflict situations,” and discussed steps toward restoring economic and humanitarian cooperation. The Russian side emphasized the need to resume direct air traffic between Moscow and Washington to promote “unimpeded contacts between societies.”
The importance of normalizing the operations of diplomatic missions was also highlighted, with both sides agreeing to continue a “constructive and mutually respectful dialogue” on a broad range of shared concerns.
The meeting, which lasted approximately one hour, was reported by Russian state news agency TASS. As of now, US authorities have not issued a formal statement on the outcome of the talks.
