Kremlin Warns Any Attack Backed by Nuclear Power Will Be Treated as Strike on Russia

MOSCOW – Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated Wednesday that any military aggression against Russia by a non-nuclear country, if supported or joined by a nuclear-armed power, would be regarded as a joint attack on Russia, potentially invoking the provisions of its nuclear doctrine.

Speaking at a press briefing in Moscow, Peskov confirmed that Russia’s nuclear doctrine remains fully in effect. “The nuclear doctrine remains in force, and consequently, all its provisions apply,” he said, while emphasizing that nuclear weapons would only be used as a last resort to defend national sovereignty.

Peskov urged all sides, particularly the United States, to press Ukraine to resume direct peace talks with Russia. “The primary mediation role belongs to the US, President Donald Trump, and his administration,” he said, expressing hope that pressure is also being applied on Kyiv amid growing Western criticism of Russia.

Commenting on Germany’s decision not to send Taurus cruise missiles to Ukraine, Peskov saw it as a sign that “vestiges of reason” still exist in Europe. However, he added that arms shipments continue under different financing arrangements: “Now some Europeans will pay for them.”

He confirmed that Moscow is closely monitoring all discussions related to long-range missile supplies to Ukraine and is attentively following all developments. Responding to increasingly hostile rhetoric from European leaders, Peskov described their stance as “rabid militarism.”

Asked whether a call between President Vladimir Putin and President Donald Trump was being planned, Peskov said no such contact is scheduled for now, but “it could be arranged promptly” if needed.
