Kremlin : No Preparations Underway for Putin-Trump Meeting

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov addressed key political topics on Monday, including a potential meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President-elect Donald Trump. While there is political will for such talks, no formal preparations are underway.

Peskov emphasized the necessity of these discussions but noted they would only proceed after Trump assumes office. Several countries have expressed interest in hosting the meeting.

On Ukraine, Peskov stated there are no prerequisites for resuming negotiations due to Kiev’s refusal to engage in talks. He reiterated Putin’s openness to dialogue with all nations, including the United States, as part of broader efforts to resolve the Ukrainian conflict. Security guarantees for Russia remain a relevant issue tied to the conflict’s resolution.

Regarding prisoner exchanges, Peskov highlighted ongoing efforts to secure the release of Russian soldiers held by Ukraine, despite the challenges. Additionally, he accused the Biden administration of attempting to leave Trump with a strained legacy in US-Russia relations, citing continued sanctions and a combative approach. Any potential change in Washington’s stance on Ukraine will depend on Trump’s inauguration, Peskov added.
