Kremlin Emphasizes Comprehensive Approach to Arms Reduction Talks Amid Security Concerns
Moscow (Sputnik) – Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov highlighted on Monday the importance of arms reduction talks, stressing that while these discussions are necessary, they must address broader security concerns in light of current global tensions. Speaking to reporters, Peskov stated, “Russia considers such contacts necessary, they cannot be postponed, but we must consider all security issues in a comprehensive manner, taking into account the current state of affairs.”
The comments followed a statement by US President Joe Biden, who reiterated his commitment to the global elimination of nuclear arsenals and expressed readiness to engage in negotiations with Russia, China, and North Korea. Biden emphasized that the United States was willing to enter these talks without preconditions, although he did not address the substantial investments the US continues to make in strengthening its nuclear capabilities.
Peskov also responded to remarks by the head of German foreign intelligence, Bruno Kahl, who suggested that Russia could pose a military threat to NATO by the end of the decade. Reaffirming Russia’s defensive posture, Peskov stated, “Russia ensures its own security and has the necessary potential for this.” He added that any discussions on nuclear arms reduction must take into account the broader security environment, particularly as the conflict involving nuclear powers continues.
