Kremlin Calls Armenian Coup Plot Claims an ‘Internal Matter’

MOSCOW – Russia on Wednesday described Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s remarks about a thwarted coup attempt as an internal affair, distancing itself from the political turmoil unfolding in Yerevan.

“This is, of course, an internal matter for Armenia,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters, emphasizing that Moscow hopes to see “law and order” preserved in the country and reaffirmed its interest in a “prosperous, stable Armenia, friendly to Russia.”

Pashinyan had earlier revealed that Armenian law enforcement agencies had foiled an attempted coup led by a senior cleric. In a post on Facebook, he accused the “criminal-oligarchic clergy” of plotting to destabilize the republic and seize power.

Armenia’s Investigative Committee confirmed the prime minister’s statement, saying the National Security Service intercepted the plot during its planning phase.
