Kenyan MP Shot Dead in Nairobi

A Kenyan Member of Parliament was shot and killed on Wednesday during broad daylight in the capital city of Nairobi, as confirmed by the Speaker of the National Assembly, who corroborated reports from various media outlets.
“It is with profound shock and unspeakable sorrow that I have this evening received the devastating news of the fatal shooting of Hon. Ong’ondo Were, the Member of Parliament for Kasipul Constituency, in an incident that occurred along Ngong Road near City Mortuary, Nairobi,” National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula posted on X.
The incident took place around 7:30 PM local time (4:30 PM GMT), and eyewitnesses reported that Were was attacked by two assailants on a motorcycle, according to Citizen TV.
“One of the armed men reportedly dismounted from the motorcycle and opened fire at close range, fatally wounding the MP,” Citizen TV reported.
Were was a member of Raila Odinga’s Orange Democratic Movement, which contested the results of the 2022 election that he lost to President William Ruto. However, in recent months, he had formed a political alliance with Ruto.
Were represented an area in Homa Bay County, a rural region in western Kenya.
