Kenya: At Least 6 Dead in Nairobi Floods

Local media reported on Wednesday that at least six people have died in Nairobi due to floods triggered by heavy rainfall over the past two days, according to authorities.

Nairobi Police Commander George Sedag warned that the death toll could rise further, as some victims may have been swept away by the floodwaters, which have left a trail of destruction and damage.

Among the deceased are a mother and her two children, who lost their lives in the impoverished Mathare neighborhood when a rock collapsed onto their home, as reported by the same source.

Preliminary investigations indicate that flooding from the river compromised the soil in the area, weakening structures and leading to the rock’s collapse onto the house while the family was asleep.

Local authorities have begun evacuating residents whose homes are at risk of flooding or landslides. The Kenyan Meteorological Department has forecast continued heavy rains in the coming days and is urging residents to exercise utmost caution.
