At least 17 students lost their lives in a fire that engulfed their school dormitory in central Kenya, police reported on Friday. The blaze at Hillside Endarasha Academy in Nyeri County erupted around midnight, although authorities did not disclose the ages of the victims.
“There are 17 fatalities,” along with several others injured, including 16 who were seriously harmed and have been rushed to a nearby hospital, said police spokesperson Resila Onyango. “The bodies found at the scene were burned beyond recognition,” she added.
“More bodies are likely to be discovered” once the site inspection is completed, she estimated. The cause of the fire remains unknown, but an investigation has been initiated.
