Junior WBC: Algerian Boxer Mustapha Abdou Secures Bronze

Algerian boxer Mustapha Abdou achieved a remarkable victory over Frantisek Martin Rusnak from the Czech Republic on Monday in the quarter-finals of the -75 kg category at the Junior World Championships, which are being held in Colorado from October 26 to November 2. This win guarantees him a bronze medal in his category.

Mustapha Abdou advanced to the semi-finals after winning his match by referee stoppage in the first round. He is set to face American Awinongya Joseph, who also won his quarter-final match against Anderson Connor from New Zealand via referee stoppage in the first round.

In the other semi-final of the -75 kg category, Australian Mac Millan Linkyn, who earned a 5-0 victory over Isaev Ramazan from Kyrgyzstan, will compete against Indian Kundu Rahul, who defeated Japanese boxer Obijiaku Ritsukiphilemon by referee stoppage in the first round.

Additionally, Mustapha Abdou was the final Algerian boxer competing in the quarter-finals of the World Boxing Championships, having been eliminated by South Korean Sangin Park with a score of 5-0.

Algeria is represented at the U19 World Championships in Colorado by a team of six boxers, under the guidance of coaches Fratsa Mourad, Bourenane Brahim, and Arab Hamza. Alongside Mustapha Abdou (-75 kg), the team includes Mohamed Abdessamed Yahiaoui (-55 kg), Ilyas Akram Laali (-65 kg), Riyadh Mohamed-Meziane (-50 kg), and Dahlal Islam (-70 kg).

More than 180 male and female boxers from 30 countries are participating in this global boxing event.

World Boxing was established in April 2023 with the mission of keeping boxing at the forefront of the Olympic movement. On May 7, 2024, it conducted its inaugural meeting with the IOC, marking the beginning of a formal collaboration between the two organizations to secure boxing’s position in the Olympic Games.

Currently, World Boxing comprises 29 national member federations across five continents actively involved in international boxing.
