Japan’s Ishiba Urges G7 Unity for ‘Lasting Peace’ in Ukraine

Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba called on G7 leaders to remain united in their efforts to bring a “lasting peace” to Ukraine. Speaking after a virtual meeting marking three years since Russia’s military operation began, Ishiba stressed that any peace process must not set a precedent that force can be used to alter the status quo. He expressed hope that diplomatic initiatives, including those led by the US, would help end the conflict.

The meeting took place amid reports that US President Donald Trump has been advancing negotiations with Russia to end the war, though Kyiv and other European governments have been excluded from the talks. Ishiba reaffirmed Japan’s commitment to working with G7 nations, with Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya emphasizing continued support for Ukraine and sanctions against Russia. He also reiterated Tokyo’s commitment to Ukraine’s reconstruction and recovery efforts.

Addressing concerns over the rising influence of far-right parties in Europe, Iwaya stated that Japan seeks to counter global divisions through diplomacy aimed at fostering cooperation. Meanwhile, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi confirmed that G7 nations are coordinating efforts to ensure a unified approach to ending the conflict in Ukraine.
