Japan Pledges $2 Million in Aid to California for Wildfire Recovery

Japan announced on Wednesday a $2 million contribution to support California’s recovery efforts following recent wildfires that claimed dozens of lives and caused widespread destruction.

The aid will be channeled through the American Red Cross to provide relief to victims, according to Japan’s Foreign Ministry. The funding aims to establish evacuation centers and provide food and psychological support for those affected by the devastating fires in the U.S. Pacific Coast state.

“Japan is committed to actively assisting in the relief of victims and supporting the swift recovery of the impacted areas,” the ministry stated.

Since January 7, the wildfires have ravaged several Los Angeles suburban areas, leaving over 20 people dead and 30 missing, as per local authorities. The blazes, fueled by dry conditions and strong winds, have forced approximately 88,000 residents to evacuate.

Regions such as Pacific Palisades and Altadena have seen significant damage, with over 12,000 buildings affected and more than 150 square kilometers of land scorched. The fires continue to burn out of control, posing ongoing challenges for emergency responders and residents.
