Ireland to Join South Africa’s ICJ Case Against the Zionist Entity

Ireland is preparing to join South Africa’s case against the Zionist entity at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) by the year’s end, according to Foreign Minister Micheal Martin on Thursday. This announcement follows the Irish parliament’s non-binding motion that recognized that “genocide is being perpetrated before our eyes by Israel in Gaza.”
In December, South Africa initiated a case against the Zionist entity, arguing that actions in Gaza violated the 1948 United Nations Genocide Convention.
Several countries, including Spain, Bolivia, Colombia, Mexico, Turkey, Chile, and Libya, have supported the proceedings. Ireland had previously stated it would submit its documentation once South Africa provided its supporting document, which was filed on Monday.
“The government’s decision to intervene in the South African case was based on detailed and rigorous legal analysis,” Martin explained to lawmakers in the Dáil, Ireland’s parliament. He emphasized Ireland’s commitment to international law and accountability, adding, “Ireland is a strong supporter of the work of the court.”
On Monday, South Africa announced it had filed a comprehensive document with the ICJ, alleging evidence of genocide by the Zionist entity in Gaza.
The document remains confidential but reportedly includes over 750 pages of text, with more than 4,000 pages of exhibits and annexes, as per President Cyril Ramaphosa’s office. An official from the Hague-based court confirmed receipt of the document but did not provide further information.
During a sparsely attended session, the Irish government did not oppose a symbolic motion accusing the Zionist entity of committing genocide against Palestinians, thereby allowing it to pass.
Additionally, Ireland recently appointed Jilan Wahba Abdalmajid as its first full Palestinian ambassador, following Dublin’s formal recognition of a Palestinian state earlier this year.
In an interview with the Irish Times published on Thursday, Ambassador Abdalmajid suggested that the Zionist entity should be suspended from the UN for severing ties with UNRWA, the UN agency aiding Palestinians. She questioned, “If you are a member of the UN and you do not abide by the rules of this organization then what is the meaning of being a member?” Abdalmajid warned that failure to suspend the Zionist entity could lead other nations to act similarly.
