Iraq to Summon US Diplomat Over Deadly Airstrike on Habbaniyah Base

Iraq announced Wednesday it will summon the US chargé d’affaires following a deadly airstrike on the Habbaniyah base that killed seven soldiers and injured 13 others.
A statement from the office of Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani said the diplomat will be handed a strongly worded protest note underscoring Iraq’s “firm and unwavering position on preserving Iraqi sovereignty” and condemning what it described as “irresponsible actions that amount to a heinous crime.”
The statement stressed that Baghdad reserves the right to respond using all means permitted under the United Nations Charter and would not remain silent over what it called a “fully fledged crime” violating international law. It also warned that the attack could further destabilize the region and damage relations between Iraq and the United States.
Iraq said it will submit a documented complaint to the United Nations Security Council and other international bodies regarding the incident.
The development comes amid ongoing US-zionist airstrikes on Iran since Feb. 28, which have killed more than 1,340 people, including then-Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. Tehran has responded with drone and missile attacks targeting the zionist entity and US-linked positions in the region.
