Iranian Parliament Commission Drafts Final Plan for NPT Withdrawal

Iran’s Parliament is weighing a possible withdrawal from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) in reaction to the European Troika’s snapback initiative, a parliamentary spokesman confirmed.
Ebrahim Rezaei, spokesperson for the National Security and Foreign Policy Commission, said in an interview that lawmakers have put forward around 15 draft proposals on leaving the NPT. The commission has consolidated these into a single final plan, but it has not yet been placed on the Parliament’s agenda. According to the draft, if the snapback mechanism is formally activated, Iran would notify the IAEA Board of Governors of its withdrawal.
Rezaei argued that Iran has gained no benefits from its NPT membership or cooperation with the IAEA, noting that despite allowing extensive inspections to prove the peaceful nature of its nuclear program, the agency has failed to provide the assistance it is obligated to deliver. He added that the NPT framework has instead been exploited as a tool for pressure against Iran.
