Iran and Russia Strengthen Security and Defense Cooperation in New Strategic Deal

TEHRAN (Sputnik) – Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi emphasized in an article for Sputnik that a crucial component of the new strategic agreement between Iran and Russia is the enhancement of security and defense cooperation.

According to Araghchi, the partnership is centered on combating terrorism and extremism, aiming to bolster regional and global stability, which serves the interests of both countries and contributes to world peace.

Araghchi clarified, however, that the deal does not constitute a military alliance. “It is a comprehensive agreement, covering all aspects of cooperation.

It is not aimed at forming a military union with a specific target,” he explained. The agreement, which will be signed by Russian President Vladimir Putin and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on January 17, builds upon the strategic partnership treaty agreed upon by both countries in June 2024.

This agreement, which replaces the 2001 treaty, includes 47 articles and addresses all areas of bilateral relations, including economy, technology, and humanitarian cooperation.
