IOM: Over 1,200 Newly Displaced in Sudan’s Kordofan Regions Amid Escalating Insecurity

More than 1,200 people were newly displaced from South and North Kordofan in southern Sudan due to worsening security conditions, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) said on Sunday. In a statement, the UN agency said its field displacement teams recorded the displacement of 780 people from the city of Dilling in South Kordofan between Wednesday and Friday as the situation deteriorated, noting that conditions in the area remain highly tense and volatile and are being closely monitored.

The IOM also reported that 510 people were displaced from the village of Al-Sanjouqi in the Umm Dam Haj Ahmed locality of North Kordofan, likewise due to insecurity. According to the agency, the displaced families moved to several locations within the Umm Dam Haj Ahmed and Sheikan localities in North Kordofan, adding to the growing humanitarian pressure in the region.

Earlier, on December 18, the IOM said the total number of displaced people across Sudan’s three Kordofan states—North, West, and South—reached 50,445 between October 26 and December 17, following weeks of intense fighting between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces. The conflict, which began in April 2023, has killed thousands and displaced millions, with the RSF controlling most of Darfur while the army holds much of the rest of the country, including the capital, Khartoum.
