ALGIERS – Algerian workers celebrate, on Thursday, International Workers’ Day, while the State continues its efforts to strengthen the professional and social achievements of this category, given its essential role in the national development process.
The issue of improving workers’ conditions has been prioritized by the high authorities since 2020, through progressive measures including the revaluation of the guaranteed national minimum wage (GNMW), the
abolition of tax on low incomes, and the increase of salaries, allowances, and retirement pensions.
In this regard, the President of the Republic decided to increase salaries by 47% starting last year, an exceptional measure considering there had been no salary increase for 10 years.
The President said that the salary increases for workers will continue progressively with the aim of improving their purchasing power and living conditions.
The professional integration of contract holders into permanent positions has also been activated, and contracts under the social integration activities scheme have been converted into indefinite-term contracts.
The implementation of these reforms continues with the promulgation of special statutes for various professional bodies, an operation concerning many sectors such as National Education, Health, and
Religious Affairs.
In this regard, the President further decided to integrate 82,410 contractual teachers into the different education cycles, a move that teachers and their union representatives consider “a strong motivation for better performance in this strategic sector.”
