Indonesia’s President Swears In 961 Regional Leaders in Historic Ceremony

JAKARTA – Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto on Thursday presided over an unprecedented mass inauguration ceremony, swearing in 961 newly elected regional heads in Jakarta. Addressing the officials, Prabowo reminded them of their duty to serve the people, emphasizing that they were chosen to defend public interests and improve lives. The newly appointed officials include governors, regents, mayors, and their deputies, all elected for the 2025-2030 term.

This marks the first time in Indonesia’s history that a president has sworn in 33 governors, 33 deputy governors, 363 district heads, 362 deputy district heads, 85 mayors, and 85 deputy mayors in a single event. Following their inauguration, the officials will undergo an eight-day military-style leadership training camp at the Magelang Military Academy in Central Java, beginning Friday.

Prabowo, who took office in October after winning the February 2024 election, has emphasized discipline and national service. He previously introduced a similar military boot camp for his Cabinet. Addressing the newly sworn-in officials, he warned: “I will see you all there. Hopefully, you are strong enough to endure the training. If you are in doubt, just step down.”
