IGU : Algeria Ranks as the World’s 7th Largest Natural Gas Exporter in 2023

Algeria has emerged as the world’s 7th largest natural gas exporter in 2023, with total exports reaching 20 billion cubic meters (m3), according to the latest report from the International Gas Union (IGU). The report, titled “Global Gas Report 2024,” was produced in collaboration with the Italian gas transporter Snam and the research firm Rystad Energy. It highlights Algeria’s growing presence in the natural gas market, with 18 billion m3 of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and 34 billion m3 of pipeline exports.
The global ranking of natural gas exporters places Russia at the top with 139 billion m3, followed by Qatar (128 billion m3), the United States (127 billion m3), Norway (120 billion m3), Australia (110 billion m3), and Canada (53 billion m3). Algeria’s strong performance underscores its strategic role in the global energy market, especially amid shifting supply dynamics.
The report also highlights major importers of natural gas, with China leading the world by importing 160 billion m3 in 2023. Japan and Germany follow, with 91 billion m3 and 77 billion m3, respectively. Global LNG trade saw significant growth, reaching 537 billion m3 in 2023. The report notes that LNG is becoming increasingly vital in the context of global energy security concerns, with the United States surpassing Australia and Qatar to become the world’s top LNG exporter.
