Guterres Welcomes US-Russia-Ukraine Energy Ceasefire and Black Sea Negotiations

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has welcomed announcements by US President Donald Trump, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy regarding a ceasefire on energy infrastructure and negotiations on securing navigation in the Black Sea.
In a statement issued by UN Deputy Spokesman Farhan Haq, Guterres acknowledged the agreement on a partial ceasefire to halt attacks on energy targets and the planned discussions to extend the ceasefire to the Black Sea. He described these developments as “important confidence-building measures” that could aid de-escalation efforts. The UN chief expressed hope that these agreements would lay the foundation for a “just, comprehensive, and lasting peace” that upholds Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Guterres also emphasized the importance of securing free and safe navigation in the Black Sea under international law, considering it a crucial step in stabilizing global food security and supply chains. He reaffirmed his continued support for freedom of navigation in the Black Sea and his commitment to the implementation of the UN-Russia Memorandum of Understanding on global food security.
