Guinea-Bissau: President Announces He Will Not Seek Re-Election

Umaro Sissoco Embalo, the President of Guinea-Bissau, has declared that he will not pursue another term when his current mandate concludes. “I will not run in 2025,” Mr. Sissoco Embalo stated during a press briefing following a meeting of the Council of Ministers.

Reports indicate that the president’s announcement took many supporters by surprise, particularly as they had already formed an initiative group to support his candidacy for the upcoming presidential election. Just a day prior, Sissoco Embalo had voiced his opposition to allowing certain political rivals to assume leadership after his tenure.

The last presidential election in Guinea-Bissau was held in December 2019, where Sissoco Embalo won in the second round of voting.
