Algerian Minister of State, Minister of Hydrocarbons and Mines Mohamed Arkab reaffirmed on Wednesday Algeria’s steadfast commitment to forging a strategic partnership with Europe in green hydrogen, hailing it as a cornerstone of both national and global energy transition, according to a ministry statement.
The pledge was delivered by Madjid Miloud, Secretary General of the Ministry of Hydrocarbons and Mines, speaking on Arkab’s behalf at the opening of an international conference in Berlin.
The event showcased progress on the Algeria-Europe Hydrogen Alliance (ALTEH2A) and the Southern Hydrogen Corridor (SoutH2).
A high-level Algerian delegation representing the hydrocarbons, mining, energy, and renewable energy sectors attended the event.
It included Sonatrach CEO Noureddine Daoudi, senior executives from Sonatrach and Sonelgaz, and top energy officials from Germany, Italy, and Austria. In his address, the Minister of State declared: “Algeria, a reliable energy partner to Europe for decades, possesses every asset needed to become a leading supplier of clean energy, including abundant renewable resources (solar and wind), modern infrastructure, and direct pipeline links to European markets.” Arkab outlined Algeria’s three-phase national strategy for a hydrogen economy, noting that a 50 MW semi-industrial green hydrogen and derivatives plant is under development in Arzew with financial backing from the German government and the European Union.
He further emphasized that “building an integrated hydrogen sector offers Algeria a dual opportunity: to deepen energy ties with Europe while advancing the global shift to clean, sustainable energy.” He reiterated Algeria’s readiness “to intensify dialogue and joint initiatives with European partners to create a secure, balanced, and sustainable energy future for all.” The ministry statement said that Algeria is finalizing the legal and institutional framework for hydrogen activities to attract investment across the hydrogen and renewable energy value chains. It is also prioritizing human capital development through new specialized university programs in the field.
