Greece: Constantine Tassoulas Elected New President by Parliament

ATHENS, February 12, 2025 – The Greek Parliament has elected Constantine Tassoulas, a member of the conservative “New Democracy (ND)” party, as the new president of the Hellenic Republic, according to media reports.

Tassoulas, 65, who previously served as the president of Parliament since the ND came to power in 2019, was elected with an “absolute majority of 160 votes” out of 300 parliamentary deputies. He will succeed Katerina Sakellaropoulou, the first woman to hold this position, whose term is set to expire in mid-March.

Tassoulas’s election occurred in the fourth round of voting, primarily supported by the 157 ND deputies, after earlier rounds required a majority of 200 votes in accordance with the Greek constitution. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis remarked in January that Constantine Tassoulas inspires “trust in society,” is “honest,” and has “a deep understanding of Greece’s history.”
