Germany Thanks Algeria for Pardoning Boualem Sansal

ALGIERS, Nov 13, 2025 – Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has received a message of thanks from the President of the Federal Republic of Germany, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, in appreciation of his humanitarian gesture in granting a pardon to writer Boualem Sansal, following a request from the German head of state, the Presidency of the Republic said Thursday in a statement.

“I am pleased with the positive response given by the Algerian President to my request for a pardon for the writer Boualem Sansal, who has readers and friends in Germany. His situation had been a great source of concern for me, and it is a good thing that he is now free,” wrote President Frank-Walter Steinmeier in his message.

“I thank my Algerian counterpart, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, for this important humanitarian gesture, which also reflects the quality of the relations and mutual trust between Germany and Algeria,” added the German President.
