Germany: Inflation Drops to 2.3%

BERLIN, February 13, 2025 – Inflation in Germany declined in January after three consecutive months of increases, according to figures released on Thursday by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis). Consumer price inflation fell to 2.3% year-on-year in January, down from 2.6% in December, the institute reported.
Having reached 1.6% year-on-year in September, the gradual rise in inflation had become increasingly concerning for Europe’s largest economy, which is already facing an unprecedented industrial crisis and two years of recession. Core inflation, which excludes consumer goods and energy, also decreased to 2.9% year-on-year, a drop of 0.3 percentage points compared to December.
In January, food prices increased by 0.8% year-on-year, reflecting a significant slowdown from the 2.0% rise recorded in December. The statement noted that the decline in energy prices in January, which fell by 1.6% year-on-year—similar to December’s figures—”continued to curb inflation.”
