GECF Reports 5.1% Increase in LNG Exports in August 2024

According to the latest monthly report from the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF), liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports from member countries rose by 5.1% in August, totaling 15.96 million tons (Mt).

“In August 2024, LNG exports from GECF Member and Observer Countries rose by 5.1% (0.78Mt) year-on-year to 15.96 Mt, marking the first monthly increase since March 2024,” the report states, which was published on the Forum’s website.

Globally, LNG exports reached 34.24 Mt in August, reflecting a 3.6% increase (1.20 Mt) compared to the same period last year. From January to August 2024, global LNG exports grew by 1.1% (+2.99 Mt) year-on-year, amounting to a total of 272.82 Mt, according to the same source.

The United States emerged as the largest exporter of LNG in August, exporting over 7 Mt, followed by Qatar and Australia.

In terms of gas consumption, the European Union (EU) experienced a decline of 4.6% in August 2024, as reported.

In the United States, gas consumption decreased by 2.3% year-on-year to 73 billion cubic meters, primarily due to a reduction in the electricity generation sector, the document explains.

For China, it is noted that in July 2024, gas demand rose by 7.4% year-on-year, reaching 35 billion cubic meters, driven by rising temperatures, particularly in Shenzhen, a significant region for gas-fired electricity production.

During the first seven months of 2024, total gas consumption in major consuming countries—which account for 60% of global gas demand—increased by 2.2% year-on-year, totaling 1.390 trillion cubic meters, according to the report.
