Gastech 2025: Sonatrach CEO Highlights the Role of Gas in Maintaining Energy Market Balance

At the Gastech Exhibition & Conference 2025 that began on Tuesday in Milan, Italy, Rachid Hachichi, CEO of the Algerian oil and gas company Sonatrach, underscored the vital role of natural gas in sustaining global energy market stability.

Hachichi participated in a closed session on the first day of this international event, centered around the theme “Enhancing the Role of Natural Gas to Ensure Energy Market Balance,” as stated in a press release from the company.

During this session, which convened nearly thirty decision-makers from the energy sector, Hachichi stressed the importance of utilizing natural gas as an energy source to maintain balance within global energy markets, especially in light of the geopolitical uncertainties currently affecting the world. He highlighted the rise of major energy consumers and the increased demand for energy driven by the expanding use of artificial intelligence.

He also addressed the challenges posed by environmental protection mandates, advocating for the pursuit of clean and low-carbon energy sources. He emphasized the need for producers and consumers to collaborate in order to secure natural gas’s position as a clean and strategic energy resource.

In his remarks, Hachichi highlighted the essential role that companies and public institutions play in establishing a legal and regulatory framework that enables natural gas to occupy its rightful place in the global energy landscape.

Additionally, the Sonatrach CEO participated in a conference alongside Masoud Suleman Moussa, Chairman of Libya’s National Oil Corporation (NOC), where they discussed “Redefining the Concept of National Oil Companies in the Era of Energy Uncertainties.”

During this discussion, Hachichi addressed the situation of state-owned national companies, which serve as the backbone of their countries’ economies and are primary guarantors of energy security. He noted that these companies must adapt to and respond to global changes, particularly in relation to energy transition, clean, and renewable energies, while continuing to support national economic sovereignty.

Regarding Sonatrach, the CEO reaffirmed the company’s commitment to ensuring Algeria’s energy security, positioning it as “a reliable and secure supplier to the European market and a strategic partner for leading energy companies,” the statement concluded.
