Galand Reiterates Commitment to Sahrawi People’s Right of Self-Determination

The President of the Conference of European Coordination for Support and Solidarity with the Sahrawi People (EUCOCO) and the Belgian Committee of Support to the Sahrawi People, Pierre Galand, reiterated on Wednesday his commitment to the Saharawi people’s right to self-determination, urging Belgium to stand on the side of international law.

In his letter to Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot, Galand said that “all UN resolutions are clear: the Saharawi people have the right to self-determination.” For Galand, “No annexation plan, however cleverly presented, can override this fundamental principle,” stressing that “only the Saharawi people have the right to decide their future and not the power that illegally occupies their territory.” In this regard, he recalled the judgment of the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) of 4 October 2024 which confirmed that Western Sahara and Morocco are two distinct territories, reinforcing the earlier opinion issued by the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
