France: Lecornu Concludes Consultations as Opposition Rejects Any Compromise

Resigning French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu will conclude on Wednesday his consultations with political parties aimed at reaching a potential compromise on the 2026 budget. He is expected to report to French President Emmanuel Macron in the evening and believes that “the prospect of dissolving the National Assembly is receding,” given that several parties have expressed their desire to ensure France adopts a budget before the end of the year.

However, the Socialist Party said it is awaiting clarifications regarding a possible suspension of the pension reform. “The budget proposal as it stands today cannot be ours,” declared Olivier Faure, rejecting any notion of a “joint government with Macron’s camp.”

Marine Le Pen, for her part, refused to take part in the discussions on behalf of the National Rally, denouncing “a joke that has gone on long enough.” She stated: “I’m rejecting everything. Now it’s over, recess is finished,” once again calling for the dissolution of the National Assembly.

France Insoumise also declined Matignon’s invitation following the National Assembly’s rejection of its motion to impeach the president.

Sébastien Lecornu is scheduled to speak on Wednesday evening during the 8 p.m. news broadcast on France 2.
